
Tovar Extends Hit Streak to 11 Games with Home Run in Loss

Richmond, VA - Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar extended his hit-streak to a team-high 11 games with his first inning home run but it wasn't nearly enough as the Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Yard Goats 22-7 on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. Tyler Fitgerald had five hits, including two homers and four RBI, as Richmond got its second win of the six-game series against Hartford. The Yard Goats gave up a franchise-highs in runs (22), hits (23), and home runs (7) in the road trip finale. The Yard Goats went 9-3 on the two-city 12 game trip, are in second place 1.5 GB in the standings, and return home to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday night to host the Reading Fightin Phils.
The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game as Ezequiel Tovar cranked a solo home run over the right field fence in the first inning against Richmond starter Gray Fenter. Richmond responded with three runs on four hits against Yard Goats starter Karl Kauffmann in the bottom of the second inning. Aaron Shunk's RBI single scored Tovar in the third to make it a 3-2 game.
However, Richmond scored three more runs in the third inning and knocked Kauffmann from the game. The inning began with a solo home run by Sean Roby, the first of seven homers by the Flying Squirrels. In the fourth, Richmond scored seven runs, highlighted by three homers by Brett Auerback, Roby, and Franklin Labour. After Riley Pint hurled a 1-2-3 fifth inning with two strikeouts, the Flying Squirrels scored seven more runs in the sixth inning to make it 20-2.
The Yard Goats rallied for five runs in the seventh inning off the Richmond bullpen. Michael Toglia and Aaron Schunk each had two-RBI doubles during the frame.
The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday, May 31st at 7:05 to host the Phillies affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP.
