DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.: Fresh off a remarkable comeback win on Tuesday, the Florida Fire Frogs had the tables turned on them Wednesday night as the Daytona Tortugas rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with a 3-2 triumph at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
RHP Sean McLaughlin got the first out of the ninth with the Frogs up 2-1, but Jose Garcia singled and a fielder's choice hit into by Andy Sugilio and subsequent fielding error by Riley Delgado put the winning run on base. Bruce Yari drilled a two-run triple just out of the reach in Andrew Moritz in left-center, pushing both runners across to seal the victory for Daytona.
McLaughlin (2-4) yielded two hits and an earned run while being handed the loss.
Yari finished the series 4-11 at the dish with three RBIs and notched his only Wednesday hit in the ninth inning.
Jefrey Ramos got the Fire Frogs off to a solid start with a run-producing single in the first, plating Moritz who led off the stanza with a double to put Florida in front, 1-0. He went 2-4.
Daytona got a run back in the third against RHP Walter Borkovich. Mark Kolozsvary and Jameson Hannah swatted doubles to even the game at 1-1.
Hannah was the only Tortuga with multiple hits, going 2-4 to pick up his third multi-hit effort since being traded to the Reds organization at the trade deadline.
Florida quickly leaped back into the lead, 2-1, on a Garrison Schwartz RBI knock, scoring Lugbauer who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Lugbauer bumped his hitting streak to five straight games, going 2-4 at the dish and turning in his 16th multi-hit effort of the campaign.
Borkovich was fantastic in his spot start, surrendering three hits and a run across four innings while receiving a no-decision. He has given up just one earned run over his three 2019 starts.
Daytona's RHP Mac Sceroler achieved new career-highs in innings pitched (6 and 1/3) and strikeouts (10) as part of a no-decision on Wednesday. He scattered eight hits and two earned runs while not issuing out a free pass.
RHP Lukas Young retired four batters in direct relief of Borkovich before having to exit the game early with a potential injury. RHP Caleb Dirks picked up right where Young left off, permitting just a hit and a walk over 2 and 2/3's scoreless frames to maintain Florida's 2-1 edge.
RHP Michael Byrne fanned three across five outs out of the Tortuga bullpen. LHP Andy Cox (3-4) was granted the winning end of the decision, striking out the side in the ninth and side-stepping a two-bagger from Jordan Rodgers.
Brett Langhorne racked up his second two-hit game of the series out of the nine-hole for the Fire Frogs.
NEXT UP: Florida has a short turnaround before welcoming the Lakeland Flying Tigers to Osceola County Stadium on Thursday at noon. RHP Spenser Watkins (1-0, 2.37) is scheduled to start the opener of the four-game set for Lakeland. The Fire Frogs starter is to be determined.
