Tortugas' José Torres Named Low-A Southeast Player of the Week
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Minor League Baseball announced on Monday that Daytona Tortugas SS José Torres has been named the Low-A Southeast Player of the Week 20 (Sept. 14-19). The 21-year-old is the second Daytona player to be honored with a weekly award this season. OF Allan Cerda received the recognition for Week 14 (Aug. 2-8).
He is the first Tortugas shortstop to receive a weekly award since José Barrero was named Florida State League Player of the Week for August 19-25, 2019.
During the six-game road series against the Palm Beach Cardinals, Torres split time between shortstop and designated hitter all six games and slashed .435/.440/.913, while adding a 1.353 OPS. The 21-year-old went 10-for-25 at the plate with five runs scored, a double, two triples, two home runs, eight runs batted in, a walk, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly.
For the week, Torres collected a Low-A Southeast-leading total in RBI (8), slugging percentage (.913), OPS (1.353), hits (10), extra-base hits (5), and total bases (21), in addition to being tied for first in triples (2) and home runs (2). The Towson, Md. resident was also second in batting average (.435), tied for fourth in runs (5), and tied for seventh in on-base percentage (.440).
On Wednesday, September 15, Torres produced a triple and a home run, while also driving in a career-high four runs to aid the Tortugas in a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals. The Dominican-born infielder finished the week with four multi-hit games, including a pair with multiple extra-base hits. He also registered a pair of multi-RBI contests in Daytona's series split.
After making his Tortugs debut on August 18 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, Torres was tied for second in Low-A Southeast in total bases (54). The Reds' No. 22 prospect per MLB.com was also tied for third in triples (3), fourth in batting average (.337), OPS (.952), hits (32), fifth in slugging percentage (.538), and ninth in RBI (17).
Torres finished his first professional season after being selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round (89th overall) of the 2021 MLB Draft out of North Carolina State University.
