Toros Take Series Lead Behind Solid Barcelo Start

September 3, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
St. George RoadRunners News Release

ST. GEORGE - Scoring three runs in the first inning gave Toros' starter Lorenzo Barcelo (1-0) all he needed Wednesday night at Bruce Hurst Field. The right-hander induced 15 groundball outs in 7.1 innings of work and received ample offensive support to lead visiting Tucson to a 9-4 win over the RoadRunners.

The Toros took a 1-0 series lead over St. George in the best-of-five GBL Southern Division Final.

Raymar Diaz was not as lucky as Barcelo early. After allowing three runs in the opening frame, Diaz allowed a booming RBI single to Dustin Yount in the second to push Tucson ahead 4-0. Two homers, a two-run shot by Lino Garcia and a solo blast by Luis Apodaca, extended the lead for the Toros.

Diaz (0-1) allowed seven runs on hits in 5.2 innings to take the game one loss.

Ryan Stevenson bombed a pair of homers and knocked home three for the bulk of the RoadRunners' offense. Jose Rodriguez had three single while Gary Harris had two hits in the late innings.

Vic Darensbourg shined from the bullpen retiring all seven batters he faced in 2.1 innings. Koichi Misawa, acquired from the Armada, scattered two runs on two hits in the ninth.

Game two of the series is Thursday night at 7:05pm. The RoadRunners will start RHP Jesse Smith, the former OC Flyer, against LHP Pete Hartmann. Join Gene Gates as he fills in for John Potter on the RoadRunners Radio Network.
