Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Capitals dropped their second in a row to the Calgary Vipers to start the best-of-five North Division Series by a 7-3 score on Wednesday night. Jose Lima kept the game close, pitching well into the eighth inning, but the offense struggled to find the clutch hit throughout the game. The Caps are now in a 0-2 hole in the series but have had some success this season in Calgary with a 3-3 record.
Calgary scored four runs between the second and fourth innings that proved to be the difference. In the second, three straight singles to lead off the inning plated the first of two runs. The Vipers would tack on a run in each of the third and fourth innings before Lima cruised until being relieved by Derrick DePriest in the eighth.
Lima (0-1) took the loss on the night after battling through 7.2 innings pitched. Lima gave up five runs on nine hits but kept his team within striking distance throughout his outing. Isaac Hess (1-0) received the win for the Vipers after six innings of work. Hess allowed just a single run on five hits. Vipers closer Mac Suzuki earned a rare three inning save, although he did give up a home run to Caps third baseman Jose Morban.
The Capitals had their chances to manufacture runs in a couple of innings. In the sixth, the Caps had runners on first and second with no one out but failed to advance the runners and Calgary escaped by way of two strikeouts and a fly ball. After the Vipers added a run in the eighth inning, the Capitals responded with a run of their own but left the bases loaded with another strikeout and fly ball.
The North Division Series will now shift to Calgary's Foothills Stadium for Game Three on Friday at 7:05pm. The game can be followed live on CapsBaseball.ca by clicking on the Pitch By Pitch link. Games Four and Five will also be played in Calgary, if necessary. The Capitals will have to sweep the three remaining games in order to advance to the Golden Baseball League Championship Series against either the Tucson Toros or the St. George RoadRunners.
