Toros Burst Energy in Overtime at 2013 NBA D-League Showcase
January 10, 2013 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
RENO, NEV., Jan. 10, 2013 - The Austin Toros were able to overcome a late rally by the Iowa Energy to secure a 105-98 win in overtime at the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase.
Cory Joseph led the Toros for the second straight game as the San Antonio Spurs assignee scored a game-high 22 points, to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
The Toros got off to a fast start, taking a commanding 29-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Iowa chipped away though, capturing the lead when Justin Hurtt sank two free throws with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
From there, Iowa's Mustapha Farrakhan drained a three-pointer, but Joseph went to work and put the Toros on his back, driving the lane on consecutive possessions, drawing two straight fouls and nailing four free throws to send the game into overtime tied at 93.
Austin took control in the three-minute NBA D-League overtime behind jump shots by Joseph and last year's NBA D-League MVP, Justin Dentmon. The Toros opened a 100-93 lead which put the game out of reach for Iowa. Dentmon tallied 18 points, five rebounds and four assists in the win.
Rick Jackson, a former Big East Defensive Player of the Year while at Syracuse University, came off a 16-point and 14-rebound effort on Tuesday and followed it up with another double-double tonight knocking down 10 points and gathering 10 rebounds. Jackson is tied for fifth in the NBA D-League in rebounds with 9.3 per game.
Chris Wright was a big part of chipping the first-half Austin lead to only four as they went into the locker room trailing 46-42. Wright finished with 14 points, six steals, six rebounds and six assists. He entered the game pacing the league with 7.6 assists. After playing a season in Turkey, the 6-1 guard out of Georgetown signed with the New Orleans Hornets in October but did not make the final roster and joined Iowa as an affiliate player.
Quincy Miller recorded a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Darius Miller collected 17 points and nailed 3-of-6 baskets from beyond the arc.
Austin (9-9) and Iowa (5-11) will both return to action on Saturday.
