Toronto travels to Virginia Beach Saturday night

Virginia Beach, Virginia – The Virginia Beach Mariners will host the Toronto Lynx Saturday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in game 3 of their 2004 campaign. Toronto, who will be playing in their fourth road match in a row, opens its 2004 home schedule on May 14. Toronto brings a 1-1-0 record into the Sportsplex and the Mariners are 0-1-1. Kick-off for Saturday night’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

THE MATCHUP

Virginia Beach

The MarinersÂ’ are coming off home and home matches with the Richmond Kickers last weekend. Virginia Beach hit the pitch in Richmond running and went up 1-0 on Jakob FengerÂ’s goal from an impossible angle in the 43rd minute. Fenger received the ball on the right side of the 6-yard box and took a strong, low shot to the near post beating Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascale. RichmondÂ’s Joey WorthenÂ’s scored late in regulation to take the game to double overtime. After 110 minutes, the match remained a draw.

The following night at the Sportsplex, Richmond went up 2-0 in the first half but after some adjustments at halftime, the Mariners outshot the Kickers 10-8 in the second 45 minutes but were unable to score.

The Mariners are led by midfielder Jakob Fenger who is ranked 16th in the League with two points in two games and ranks 7th with seven shots. Goalkeeper Matt Nelson ranks 3rd in the League in saves with 14 in two matches and ranks 6th in minutes, playing 200 in two matches.

Toronto

The Lynx beat Puerto Rico in their season opener 1-0 and lost to Rochester 4-0 on May 1. They travel to Richmond May 6 before arriving in Virginia Beach May 8.

Striker Ali Gerba who scored the winning goal against Puerto Rico leads Toronto. He led the Lynx in 2003 with six goals and fourteen points. Goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock is tied for second in the League with one shutout in three matches, third in the League with 1 win and fourth in saves with 14.

VIRGINIA BEACH MARINERS TEAM NEWS

Midfielder Jakob Fenger was named to the A-League Team of the Week for his goal in the 1-1 tie with Richmond on April 30. JakobÂ’s goal was the first for the team this season.
