Toronto to welcome AHL All-Stars

Toronto will welcome 48 American Hockey League All-Stars to the city as the Toronto Marlies - AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs - get set to host the 2007 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic on January 28 and 29.

Ricoh Coliseum at Exhibition Place will serve as the host venue for this event known for showcasing some of hockey's top talent outside of the National Hockey League.

The exciting two-day event includes a number of festivities both on-and-off the ice. The All-Star Classic will host the 2007 CCM AHL All-Star Skills Competition this evening starting at 7 p.m. Bragging rights will be up for grabs as players compete in challenges such as Accuracy Shooting, Fastest Skater and Hardest Shot.

The AHL All-Stars will visit Bloorview Kids Rehab Monday where they will spend time with young patients, play games and sign autographs. Later that morning the AHL All-Stars will join Don Cherry and former AHL and NHL players Adam Oates and Steve Thomas at the Hockey Hall of Fame AHL All-Star Luncheon at Heritage Court.

The 2007 AHL All-Star Game takes place Monday, January 29 at 7 p.m. Representing the Marlies in this year's All-Star Classic are Erik Westrum for the PlanetUSA team and Kris Newbury as a member of Canadian AHL All-Star team. Both players were elected to their respective team's starting lineup.

Presently more than 82 per cent of NHL's current players began their professional career and honed their skills in the AHL. AHL graduates include the Leafs' Kyle Wellwood and John Pohl, Ottawa's Jason Spezza, Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis, Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff and Buffalo's Daniel Briere.
