The Toronto Marlies split their opening 10th Anniversary weekend series with the Utica Comets, affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. The season kicked off Saturday October 11th at Ricoh in a tightly contested affair. The Marlies were unable to regain the lead after a strong second period from Utica who went on to win 2-1 with goals from Alexandre Grenier and Dustin Jeffrey. Marlies goaltender Antoine Bibeau, in his first AHL start, was steady making 32 saves in the losing effort. Forward Connor Brown, also making his AHL debut, assisted on Trevor Smith's first period goal for his first AHL point.

Sunday's rematch saw a change of fortunes for the Marlies. The scoring opened with a shorthanded tally from Troy Bodie in the second period. Trailing 2-1 late in the third period, Viktor Loov tied the game and forced overtime with his first goal and first AHL point. The smooth skating Swede then converted a pass from Spencer Abbott in overtime to give the Marlies their first win of the season by a score of 3-2. Loov was named the game's first star.
