Tornadoes Sign Mass. Native to Pitching Staff

WORCESTER, Mass.-- The Worcester Tornadoes signed right handed pitcher Bryan Leigh to a contract Friday morning. The Fall River, Mass. native spent the last two seasons in the Seattle Mariners Organization after playing four years at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Leigh made 27 appearances out of the pen in affiliated ball split between two levels. He threw for the Short Season-A Everett (Wash.) AquaSox in 2011 after pitching the previous season with the Pulaski (Va.) Mariners. He totaled 43 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched in his minor league campaigns, while recording a 1.71 ERA during his season in the Appalachian League. He allowed three runs on five hits in his last 8.2 innings pitched in the Northwest League, retiring eight batters via strikeout along the way.

Bryan alternated between starting and relieving for the Minutemen, notching five complete games in only 19 starts. He came out of the bullpen 20 times in his Massachusetts collegiate career (after spending his freshman year at Barry University). In his last appearance for UMass (in April 2010), Leigh pitched eight shutout innings for the victory, striking out a season-high 11 batters and allowing just four hits.

The Worcester Tornadoes 2012 season starts in Newark, New Jersey on Thursday, May 17 against the Bears. The first game at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field is Monday, May 21 at 7:05pm against the Quebec Capitales.
