Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA - After completing another successful tour of New England schools last year, Dave Smith and the Worcester Tornadoes School and Community Education Program are back and better than ever this school year.
Smith, the Tornadoes Third Base Coach and Director of Community Affairs & Education, schedules and leads the school visits. Smith's program teaches children about a number of topics, including the importance of reading, being active and staying healthy, showing good sportsmanship, and careers in sports or sports management. This year, Smith's presentations feature the "Keep the Magic Alive" theme, in which he incorporates a variety of magic tricks into his program. Smith is accompanied in his school visits by a variety of guests that may include Tornadoes coaches, players, Manager Rich Gedman, and team mascot, Twister.
Smith has already visited 45 schools and nearly 7,800 students since the beginning of the current school year, and has another 24 presentations already lined up. Last school year, Smith and the Tornadoes brought the program to over 38,000 school children in 178 schools in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut . These children had the chance to meet Tornadoes players, coaches and Twister, and hear Smith's important messages, all with a fun, baseball theme.
"We are thrilled with the tremendous early response we've received with the Tornadoes School and Community Education Program this year," said Smith, a certified, 20-year educator in the Massachusetts school system. "We've increased the number of schools visited and the number of students reached every year, and this year our goal is 200 schools and 50,000 children. The Tornadoes are committed to being active educators in the community, and it's wonderful to see the number of schools that have embraced us and the importance of our message."
The visits are free of cost, and are set up based on the needs and schedule of each individual school. The program is intended for schools within a 45 mile approximate radius of Worcester . To schedule a school visit or for more information about the Worcester Tornadoes School and Community Education Program, please contact Dave Smith at 508-792-2288 or dsmith@worcestertornadoes.com.
