South Georgia Tormenta FC News Release
STATESBORO, Ga. - South Georgia Tormenta FC continued its hot streak tonight, dominating USL League One defending champion Greenville Triumph SC 3-1 at Erk Russell Park. Lars Eckenrode, Nick O'Callaghan and Marco Micaletto all scored for the club's fourth consecutive win, jumping the team up to third in the League One standings.
Tormenta FC led Greenville 2-0 at the half, thanks to two clever crosses by Austrian talent Luca Mayr-Fälten. In the 31st minute, O'Callaghan was taken down outside the box, earning a free kick in a perfect scoring spot. Mayr-Fälten took the Greenville squad off guard with brilliant cross into the box, where center back Eckenrode headed the ball in for the first goal of the night.
Just before the halftime whistle blew, Tormenta FC earned another set-piece opportunity in the opponent's half. Mayr-Fälten shot the free kick into the box, where O'Callaghan chested the ball over the keeper to double the home side's lead.
Greenville then responded with a goal in the 50th minute but was unable to tie up the match. In the 83rd, Micaletto beat Greenville's defenders with fancy footwork before being taken down inside the penalty box. Micaletto then converted Tormenta FC's third goal of the night and his fourth of the season.
In the second half, Tormenta FC's subs made all the difference and controlled the game, adding extra energy and attack. Rodney Michael, Vincenzo Candela and Raheem Somersall all entered the match in the 56th minute, followed by Kristo Strickler and Stefan Mueller later in the half.
Notably, there were eight former Tormenta FC 2 players on the pitch tonight - Greenville's JJ Donnelly, Marco Micaletto, Curtis Thorn, Luca Mayr-Fälten, Kobe Perez, Joshua Phelps, Rodney Michael and Raheem Somersall.
Tormenta FC will now travel to play Toronto FC II on the road on Wednesday, June 23, before hosting the Canada side on Wednesday, June 30, at Erk Russell Park at 8 p.m. ET. Due to inclement weather on June 5, Tormenta FC has partnered with Statesboro Pride again to close out Pride Month in full force on Wednesday, June 30. Fans should purchase their tickets, including season tickets, half-season plans or quarter-season plans, in advance.
