Tormenta FC, Ibis Foundation Announce JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez Scholarship

December 7, 2021 - United Soccer League One (USL1) - South Georgia Tormenta FC News Release

Statesboro, Ga. - South Georgia Tormenta FC and the Ibis Foundation have announced the formation of the JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez Scholarship, established in memory of JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez, a former Tormenta FC Academy player.

Gonzalez, a Bluffton, South Carolina native, passed away in a tragic car accident on Dec. 4, 2021. Gonzalez was a member of the Tormenta FC Academy for a decade, and his family has been heavily involved with the club since its founding.

"JonPaul loved the game of soccer and playing for his club, Tormenta FC," Christina Galbreath-Gonzalez, mother of JonPaul states. "In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez Scholarship Fund to give the opportunity for a child to play the game JP loved so much."

The Ibis Foundation will accept donations in memory of Gonzalez, which will go towards funding one chosen TFC Academy player's team and uniform fees each year, starting with TFC Academy's 2022 season.

"We are absolutely heartbroken for JP and his family," Tormenta FC Academy Vice President Brad Nein said. "A great friend, leader, and soccer player; JP stood for all that is good in growing up in an amazing family that is committed to each other's successes. We loved having JP as a member of the Tormenta Family and will forever cherish the warm memories we all made together on and off the soccer field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones, as well as everyone who's been impacted by this tragic loss."

Tormenta FC Academy and The Ibis Foundation work together to promote the sport of soccer throughout South Georgia and the Low Country by providing resources and training opportunities to local youth at a significantly lower cost.
