Tormenta FC Defeats Tampa Bay Rowdies
February 25, 2019 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
South Georgia Tormenta FC News Release
Saturday, the Tormenta FC squad gave fans an exciting preview for what's to come in 2019, defeating the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a preseason match. With Marco Micaletto's clever goal in the 15th minute and two goals from former Rowdies player Alex Morrell, Tormenta FC finished on top with a final score of 3-2.
"Saturday was a good day for us, and we learned a lot about where we need to improve," USL League One head coach John Miglarese said. "The Rowdies are a very good team with some top players, and they caused us a tremendous amount of problems. It was a competitive game that brought an exciting atmosphere for the fans."
Forward Alex Morrell spent his past two seasons playing for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, but Saturday he faced them for the first time as a League One player. The forward scored first in the 23rd minute, followed by the game-winning goal in the 56th. Morrell's professional experience in USL Championship and in the MLS with Chicago Fire will surely continue to give Tormenta FC an edge going forward.
During halftime against the Rowdies, Tormenta FC officially announced that the Groundbreaking Ceremony for its 5300 seat stadium will be held Wednesday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. All fans are invited to participate in the ceremony as it will be B.Y.O.S or "Bring Your Own Shovel." The stadium will be built next to The Clubhouse on Old Register Road and will bring an exciting and authentic professional soccer experience to South Georgia.
Following the Groundbreaking Ceremony, Tormenta FC will then host the inaugural USL League One home opener at Erk Russell park on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. against Greenville Triumph SC.
