Tony Salmelainen to join Finland for Baltica Cup

The Edmonton Road Runners have announced they will release right-winger Tony Salmelainen so he can compete for Finland at the upcoming 2004 Baltica Cup tournament.

The four-team Baltica Cup tournament will be played in Moscow, Russia from December 16th to 19th and features the national teams of Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Czech Republic.

Salmelainen will be released following the Road Runners game versus the Manitoba Moose on Sunday, December 12th and will miss four games. He will miss the Road Runners two road games versus the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks on December 17th and 18th and the two-game home series with the Hamilton Bulldogs on December 20th and 22nd. He returns to the lineup for Edmonton’s December 27th game at Hamilton.

Salmelainen currently leads the Road Runners in scoring with 10-11-21 in 23 games. He leads Edmonton in both goals and assists and is fourth in the AHL with a +16 plus/minus ranking.
