Lincoln Stars News Release

Lincoln Stars defenseman and co-captain Tony Follmer has announced his commitment to Bemidji State University, an NCAA Division I program in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), beginning in the 2021-22 season.

"It feels great just to get that out of the way during the season so I can on focus on playing in Lincoln and developing here," Follmer said. "I'm excited to get back there and go to Bemidji next year."

Follmer, 20, has registered two assists in three games so far this season in a top-line shutdown role for the Stars. In 103 career USHL games, the O'Fallon, MO native has scored three goals and added 12 assists.

"I've grown a ton [throughout my USHL career]," Follmer continued. "A lot of that has to do with my confidence picking up after my first year. I've kept it rolling over the past few years and I've felt really good about my game."

Follmer joined the Stars in a trade from the Sioux Falls Stampede on February 25th, 2019. He first suited up for Lincoln on March 1st, 2019 against the Omaha Lancers and is the active leader among all Stars players in USHL games played.

"Watching him grow over the last two years and change, both on and off the ice, has been a complete privilege and a pleasure," Stars GM/Head Coach Chris Michael said. "He's an unbelievable human being who has the right mindset to get better every single day. I'm really proud of him accomplishing one of his goals. To see all the work he's put in and to see that come to fruition, it was a big-time day for him and for all of us."

The Beavers have yet to win a NCAA Division I championship, but they've qualified for the NCAA Tournament at the D-I level five times (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010), including a miraculous run to the Final Four in 2009 as the No. 16 seed.

Bemidji State compiled an impressive 20-5-5 record during the 2019-20 season and defeated Lake Superior State in the first round of the 2020 WCHA Conference Tournament. The tournament was cancelled shortly after due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
