Keene Swamp Bats News Release
KEENE - Tommy Doyle (Virginia) made his season debut for the SwampBats (5-1) and did not disappoint in front a packed house at Alumni Field. Doyle went 6.2 innings, gave up just one earned run on three hits, and struck out seven as the SwampBats defeated the Plymouth Pilgrims (3-4) 3-1.
After a night where the SwampBats went deep into their bullpen, Doyle did just what he needed to do by going deep into the game. Doyle set the tone early by attacking the strike zone right from the start and faced just one over the minimum through the first four innings. Doyle pounded the strike zone early in counts, throwing 19 first pitch strikes to the 25 batters he faced.
"I was just pumping fastballs," said Doyle. "Yesterday's game we weren't getting ahead with the fastball so I just working on that tonight."
Doyle's lone mistake came in the seventh inning when he gave up a solo-home run to Pilgrims centerfielder Michael DeRenzi (Georgetown).
Jordan Howard (Lee) got things going for the 'Bats offensively, launching a 2-run home run over the left field fence in the fourth inning. It was Howard's second consecutive game with a home run.
"I'm seeing the ball so well. I was up in 2-0 in the count and was expecting a fastball. He gave it to me and I was able to do damage with it," said Howard.
The SwampBats third run of the game came in the seventh inning when Brandt Stallings (Georgia Tech) and Jack Morock (Iowa Western) hit back-to-back doubles to put SwampBats back up two.
Carmen Giampetruzzi (Boston Col) and Michael LaBeau (Castleton St.) came in relief of Doyle and threw 2.1 scoreless innings to close things out for the SwampBats.
Another packed house was at Alumni Field to cheer on the SwampBats to their fifth win on the season. Total attendance for the game was 2,297.
The SwampBats are back at it tomorrow when they travel to Sanford, Maine to take on Sanford Mainers at 6:30 PM. The game can heard live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
