Tobs Takes Thriller at Peninsula

June 13, 2017 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release

The Tobs had lost three straight overall and five straight against the Peninsula Pilots in the season series. Monday night at War Memorial Stadium, both of those streaks came to an end.

The Tobs held on for a thrilling 11-10 win on the road in Hampton, Virginia, a game that saw five total home runs hit, 21 runs scored, and a five-run lead erased.

The Tobs, trailiing 3-0 when the top of the third began, took a 4-3 lead when Tanner Johnson hit a three-run home run over the left center field wall, his third of the year. Back-to-back triple from Zack Smith and Brady Lloyd helped the Tobs plate three more in the top of the fourth. Shane Shepherd then hit a long two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Tobs a 9-4 lead, Shepherd's first home run in 2017. Peninsula however plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at nine.

Neither team would score again until the Tobs plated two in the top of the ninth, when AJ hunt came up with runners on second and third. He hit a grounder to first, but Pilots first basemen Spencer Horwitz overthrew pitcher Tad Ratliff covering the bag, and Kyle Butler and CJ Ballard scored. In the bottom half, KJ McAllister came on and locked down the save for the Tobs, stranding the potential tying run at third base, picking up his third save. With the win, the Tobs improved to 4-8 in CPL play, and Peninsula dropped to 9-3 with the loss.

The Tobs return home tomorrow to play Peninsula in the final game of the three game set. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Historic Fleming Stadium.
