
Tobs Take 2nd Half Division Lead on Tuesday Night 4-3 Win over Marlins

WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs (13-11, 3-1) scored four unanswered runs on Tuesday night against the Morehead City Marlins (17-10, 3-2) to win 4-3 at Historic Fleming Stadium.
With the win, the Tobs take sole possession of first place in the CPL East Division in the second half standings.
The Marlins struck first with a two-run top of the 4th inning off Tobs starting pitcher Peter Schaefer (Johns Hopkins). Conner VanCleave (kU) plated the first Morehead City run on an RBI double. With the bases loaded, Dashon Moore (Georgetown College) has hit by a pitch to extend Morehead City's lead to 2-0.
VanCleave drove in Jack Harris (Newberry College) on a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning increasing the Marlins lead to three runs for a 3-0 advantage over the Tobs.
Tobs reliever Jon Beymer (Campbell) stopped the bleeding in the 6th inning by pitching around a one-out walk to hang a zero on the board.
Wilson would not go down easy at the plate and tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 6th. Braedon Blackford (Purdue-Ft. Wayne) and Riley Jepson (UT-Tyler) started off the frame with back-to-back singles off Marlins starting pitcher Jonathan Lavalee (Long Beach State). Dusty Baker (Mount Olive) followed with a two-RBI triple and scored on a Logan Eickhoff (Eastern Illinois) two-out infield base hit to tie the game three apiece.
The Tobs plated a fourth unanswered run in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead 4-3 when Blackford drove in Drew DeVine (Western Michigan) on a single to right field.
Kolton Scherbenske (UNC-Charlotte) received a hold in the 8th inning by pitching a clean frame with help from his defense on an unassisted double play by Tobs third baseman Dylan Scaranda (Barton College). ÃÂ
In the top of the 9th, Nolan DeVos (Davidson) struck out two Marlins on way to recording the save in a 1-2-3 frame.
Beymer (Campbell) got the win for Wilson pitching 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings in relief.
Cam Seguin (UMass-Lowell) took the loss for Morehead City. He gave up one run on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Schaefer finished the night allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks in 4.0 innings pitched.
In his final start for the Marlins prior to the 2021 MLB Draft, the Tobs jumped Lavalee for three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
