Tobs Squash Salamanders at Home, 8-5

WILSON, N.C. - Designated hitter JT Stone delivered a pair of doubles at the plate for the Wilson Tobs on Sunday night as part of an 8-5 victory at Historic Fleming Stadium against the Holly Springs Salamanders. The Tobs used a six-run fifth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 advantage.

Stone finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in and one run scored, while Kevin McGowan added a pair of doubles to go along with two RBI and two runs scored. Brenton Doyle tallied a pair of hits in the leadoff spot for the Tobs, while Carson Freeman and Ben Faso each notched a hit. Caleb Dean blasted his second home run of the season for the Tobs in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating three runs.

The Salamanders opened the scoring against Wilson starter Chris Kernen in the top of the second inning with a single from Daulton Martin. Holly Springs would then up its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a pair of run-scoring singles from Martin and Chris Davis.

Wilson started its rally in the bottom of the fourth against Holly Springs starter Caden O'Brien. Stone would plate McGowan with a double to make it 3-1 after McGowan started the frame with a double of his own to left field.

With the bases loaded for the Tobs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jacob Nester worked his third walk of the contest to bring home a run and make it 3-2. McGowan would then give Wilson its first lead of the night with a double down the right-field line as he put the Tobs up 4-3. Dean then cleared the bases with his second home run of the season to increase the advantage to 7-3.

Both teams plated late runs in the contest as Holly Springs scored a run in both the seventh and ninth innings, while Wilson added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wilson reliever Eddy Tavarez (1-0) notched his first win of the season after tossing a scoreless fifth inning. Ryan Troutman and Cody Smith also recorded clean frames for the Tobs. Phil Simpson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Salamanders after failing to record an out in the fifth inning. Simpson allowed five runs off three hits and walked one before exiting the contest.

The Tobs will be off on Monday and hit the road on Tuesday for a matchup against the Edenton Steamers at 7 p.m. Wilson is back at Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night for its July 4th Firework Extravaganza presented by Thomas Law Attorneys. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first pitch to follow at 6 p.m.
