Wilson Tobs News Release
Wilson, N.C. - It's time to focus on the Tobs utility players that can do it all. Ethan English (John A Logan), Tyler Jones (Chowan University), and Logan Eickhoff (North Central Missouri College) will be seen all over the field at Historic Fleming Stadium this summer. These well-rounded athletes will bring a variety of talent to the Tobs roster and will be making an impact every game. Not only will these men be starters, but they also provide the Tobs the ability to fill in the gaps when others may need a break.
First on our list of Tobs stars this week we have Ethan English. A right-handed pitcher and 1st baseman out of nationally ranked John A Logan (NJCAA) who has signed his NLI to play at Texas Christian University (TCU) in 2021. The 6'4 230lb righty was a two-way threat for the Vols this spring clocking in 7.1 innings pitched while earning 2 saves in the shortened season. English also managed to tally up a 3.68 ERA and allowed 0 home runs. At the bat for the Vols he played 17 games, had 53 plate appearances, and collected 18 hits. English also batted .400 while belting 5 doubles and 4 home runs while at first base. Last summer before coming to John A Logan, Ethan played in the Alaskan League where he had an impressive OPS of .794, 9 doubles, 2 triples, and 4 home runs. The Tobs look forward to watching Ethan's success on both sides of the ball.
Next up we have the right hand hitting UTL infielder, Tyler Jones. He comes to us from Tobs Head Coach Harry Markotay's alma mater, Chowan University. Jones spent most of his time at third base for the Hawks, but also played many infield positions in the Coastal Plain League in previous summers for the MHC Marlins (2017) and the Edenton Steamers (2018). For the Steamers Jones was able to rack up 31 games played, 81 at bats, and 6 RBIs. During Jones' freshman year at Chowan he managed a batting average of .329, 73 at bats, and 24 hits. Jones kept his momentum going into his sophomore season of 2018 with a .300 batting average, 110 at bats, and 2 home runs. Before a season ending injury stopped Jones from a big year in 2019, he was getting on base at a high rate with an OPS of 1.306 in the leadoff spot and again in 2020 where he was 7-7 in stolen bases and walked 18 times. Hustle and grit describe Tyler's game play to go along with a steady glove and a knack for getting on base and scoring runs. Tobs fans will enjoy watching Tyler cross home plate often this summer.
Lastly, from North Central Missouri College (NJCAA), is Logan Eickoff. Eickhoff recently signed his NLI to Eastern Illinois for this upcoming 2021 season and is a true utility player in all senses of the title. He can be seen playing everywhere from center field to third base, and even catcher. Versatility, speed, and agility along with his strong arm and ability to put the ball on the barrel is what makes Logan such a threat all over the field. In the shortened 2020 season Logan was batting .458, with 28 RBI, scored 24 runs, and stole 13 bags in just 21 games. Last summer, Eickhoff was named Player of the Year in the MINK summer baseball league where he batted .416 with an OPS of .972, amassing 72 hits including 12 doubles and 7 triples while striking out only 17 times in 41 games. His well-rounded baseball abilities and true utility player style will fill many roles for coach Markotay this summer.
