
Tobs Lose CPL Opening Night

Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs lost to Peninsula Pilots on Tuesday, 7-6, in the Coastal Plain League Opening Night at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Peninsula Pilots improve to 1-0 and the Tobs fall to 0-1.
Game Rewind
-Peninsula opened the game by scoring in the first inning off an error from the catcher
-Tobs answered with Roberto Rivera scoring off of a wild pitch
-Peninsula regained their lead in the second as two runners scored off a single to right field
- Tanner Johnson and Nick Stotler hit solo home runs to tie up the game at 3, in the second inning
-Peninsula scored once more in the third inning off a single to left field, to take the lead 4-3
- Jacob Williamson drove in the tying run as he knocked a single through the 5.5 hole
-A Peninsula error by the catcher allows Rivera to score from third to give the Tobs the lead, 5-4 in the fourth inning
-Peninsula would answer as they scored off a wild pitch to even up the score at 5 in the fifth
-After a quiet couple of innings, Peninsula regained the lead with a walk in the eighth, 6-5
- Rivera hit a leadoff double in the ninth, stole third then proceeded to score the game tying run on a passed ball, 6-6.
-In the top of the 11th, Peninsula hit the go-ahead single up the middle to take the lead, 7-6
At the Plate
- Stotler and Johnson hit their first home run of the season
- Rivera finished the night 2-for-4 with three runs scored including the tying run in the ninth
On the Mound
- Cody Smith started for the Tobs and delivered 2 innings, tallied four strikeouts and three earned runs.
- Hank Simpson came in the game to relieve in the third and tallied three consecutive strikeouts to end the third. Simpson threw 5.1 innings, tallied three hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
- Jakob Ryan threw 1.2 innings, tallied two hits, one walk and three strikeouts
- Cole Hinnant took over in the ninth. Hinnant finished the night with three hits, one run, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout through two innings. Hinnant received the loss.
On Deck
-The Tobs will head to Morehead City, N.C. for their first away game of the season against the Morehead City Marlins.
-The Tobs next home game is Thursday, June 1st and it will be Throwback Thirsty Thursday at Historic Fleming Stadium. It is also Wilson Chamber of Commerce Night.
The Wilson Tobs enter their 21 st season as an original member within the Coastal Plain League for the 2017 Summer. The upcoming season for the Tobs will see an expanded community outreach effort, increased participation in helping the less fortunate and more exciting entertainment for the Wilson Community.
