Wilson Tobs News Release

Wilson, NC - The Wilson Tobs 6th Annual High School Varsity Baseball Classic was another great success for the Tobs, as well as the local community. This event was highlighted with seven total games scheduled, three on Friday evening and four throughout the day on Saturday.

The Tobs continued to expand their collection events for the Home Run for Hunger program with the Varsity Baseball Classic. The Classic was the second collection event of the year and saw great success. Teams were not charged an entrance fee but instead were asked to bring canned goods to support the cause. Fans that donated canned goods received a discount entry ticket into that day's games, as well as a ticket for the Tobs Home Run for Hunger Celebration on Sunday, June 24th.

Four different schools, and fans, donated over 100 canned goods each: CB Aycock (189), DH Conley (146), Orange High School (116), and Cardinal Gibbons (143). The remainder of the collectors included Wilson Christian Academy (99), Fike (35), JH Rose (99), Nash Central (75), North Lenoir (28), Rosewood (93), South Johnston (84), Hunt (77) and Wake County Home School (65). In total 1,249 canned goods were collected throughout Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the canned goods donated by schools and their fans, Food Lion dropped by and donated 1,500 pounds of food to help benefit the local community of Wilson. The Food Lion Feeds Program believes that "...no one should have to choose between dinner and rent." They are focused on helping local communities, which is why they have partnered with the Tobs and our effort to help eradicate hunger in our community.

In baseball action, Friday's opening night saw the Wake County Home School defeat Wilson Christian in the first game of the Classic 12-1. The second game had North Lenoir taking on Nash Central for a 10-5 win. The final game of the evening saw South Johnston coming from behind in the final inning to defeat Rosewood 10-6.

The final slate of games on Saturday lived up to the hype. Powerhouse JH Rose successfully took down Hunt in a 7-1 win to start off the day. In the second game of the day, Orange High School fell to CB Aycock 7-2. The final matchup of the Classic saw DH Conley pull out an entertaining 9-8 win against Cardinal Gibbons to finish out the weekend's action. Due to weather the final game between Fike vs. Sanderson was postponed to a later date.

The Tobs next Home Run for Hunger collection sites will be at the Wilson City Easter Tournament this weekend, Friday, March 30th and Saturday, April 1st located at Fike, Hunt, and Historic Fleming Stadium. Following that is the Wilson City Little League Opening Day, Saturday, April 7th, located at the Gillette Athletic Complex.

Teams and parents are encouraged to donate canned goods, as a competition has been created for the teams. The team with the most donated goods will receive a team prize courtesy of the Wilson Tobs.

The Wilson Tobs home opener and Firework Show for the 2018 season is Sunday, May 27th. Season tickets and ticket packages are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (252) 291-8627, or by visiting www.wilsontobs.com/tickets.
