Tobs hang on to beat Marlins
I n what's sure to be one of the wildest games of the 2017 CPL season, the Tobs pulled out a 9-8 win in 10 innings at Puck O'Neal Field in Morehead City against the Morehead City Marlins on Wednesday night.
Scoring summary:
The Tobs struck first in the top of the third inning when Jacob Williamson drove in Alex King on an RBI single, and they would hold that one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth, when the Marlins tied it at one after a double and a throwing error by Tobs shortstop Alex King. And while King's miscue gave Morehead City a run, he made sure to earn it right back. King hit a go-ahead solo home run to left center to put the Tobs up 2-1, and then two batters later Trevor Kelly made it a 3-1 game with a solo shot of his own, this one to left field.
The Tobs kept the run parade going in the ninth, batting around and adding five more runs to take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth via three hits, two hit batsmen and two walks. However, Morehead City came charging back to score seven runs in their half, tying the score at 8. But in the top half of the tenth inning, the Tobs pushed the go-ahead run across yet again, this time from a misplayed Alex King fly ball in deep left, scoring Roberto Rivera. The Tobs would hold that one-run lead for good by blanking the Marlins in the tenth, pulling out a hard-fought 9-8 victory.
At the Plate:
- Alex King reached base all six times he came to the plate, finishing 3-4 with a home run, two singles, three runs scored, also drawing two walks and reaching on an error.
- Trevor Kelly finished with 2 hits including a home run in the 8th inning.
- Roberto Rivera scored two runs, upping his season total to five, while also recording two hits.
- Jacob Williamson had two hits and also scored a run, coming in the Tobs' five-run 9th inning.
On the mound:
- Marcello Betances started the game and threw five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four without walking a batter.
- Will Edwards turned in three plus innings of relief, surrendering three runs and striking out four, including striking out the side in the 8th.
- Peter Masterson picked up the win, his first of the season, getting the final two outs in the ninth and keeping Morehead City from pushing across the winning run.
- KJ McAllister came on and nailed down the save, his first of the season, throwing a scoreless tenth, where he struck out each of the three batters he faced.
