
Titans ground Wings with 11-8 victory

New York, N.Y.- The New York Titans dealt the Philadelphia Wings their first home loss of the season with a 11-8 victory Saturday night at the Wachovia Center. The win brings the Titans record to 9-6 as they prepare to take on the Rochester Knighthawks at the Garden on Saturday, April 26th for the last game of the regular season. New York could clinch a playoff spot tonight if the Toronto Rock and the Rochester Knighthawks win their respective matches still in play. The Titans would automatically clinch the fourth playoff spot if they win their game against Rochester next Saturday.
In the first quarter of the match, the Titans and the Wings exchanged goals for a 2-2 tie before the Titans scored two unanswered goals to end the first quarter leading 4-2.
The second quarter was mostly a defensive struggle with some hard hitting. Mike McLellan scored his second goal of the game, a power play goal which was answered a few minutes later by the league?s leading scorer, Athan Ianucci. The lamp remained unlit for the rest of the quarter and the Titans led 5-3 at the half.
The Titans scored three goals to the Wings? two in the third quarter and increased their lead to 8-5 before heading into the final quarter in regulation.
The Wings turned it on early in the fourth with Shawn Nadelen and Ianucci netting a goal a piece within the first three minutes of play. McLellan answered back with the Titans? first goal of the fourth, bringing the score to 9-7. Ianucci got one more goal in for the Wings before the Titans scored two goals to close out the game with a final score of 11-8. The Titans are the only team to have beaten the Wings at home all season and are the only team to have beaten them twice this season.
Pat Maddalena was the game?s leader in points with 10 off of four goals and six assists. Brendan Mundorf scored two goals and dished four assists and McLellan added a hat trick for the Titans.
For the Wings, Ianucci scored four goals and one assist.
Titans goalie Matt Vinc was a brick wall stopping 36 shots on the night.
The Titans play their last regular season game on Saturday, April 26 at 8pm at the Garden, when they take on the Rochester Knighthawks.
