PHILADELPHIA - In front of 17,340 fans, the largest crowd since 2002, at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, the Wings defeated 11-8 out for the first time at home in the 2008 season, by the New York Titans. The Titans out shot the Wings 54-43.
"It was a terrific effort by both teams. We had a good defensive battle, but the Titans were able to convert on more opportunities," commented Head Coach Dave Huntley.
Casey Powell put the Titans on the board first with a goal at 4:03, and the Wings went scoreless until 5:09 when Jake Bergey posted a goal, assisted by Merrick Thomson and A.J. Shannon. The teams traded goals until the Titans had back-to-back scores to end the quarter, taking a 4-2 lead.
In the second quarter, the Titans started the scoring with a goal by Mike McLellan, his second of the game. Athan Iannucci scored the only goal for the Wings in the quarter, as the Titans took a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Iannucci got the Wings offensive by scoring in the third quarter quickly with a goal in the first 23 seconds. The Wings goal was quickly answered with three goals from the Titans; two from Maddalena and one from Brendan Mundorf. Geoff Snider's score at 9:00 cut the deficit to 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
In an attempt to close the Titan's lead, the Wings scored back-to-back goals from Shawn Nadelen and Iannucci, his fourth of the night, for a total of 67 goals this season. The Wings were unable to catch the Titans as they tallied three more goals resulting in a final score of 11-8.
Leading the Wings were Iannucci with five points (4G, 1A), A.J. Shannon with three points (1G, 2A) and Nadelen with two points (1G, 1A). Goaltender Brandon Miller made 43 saves.
