TinCaps "Walk" Off with Victory

Fort Wayne, IN - A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Fort Wayne TinCaps a 3-2 victory in the series opener at Parkview Field. Bayron Zepeda (ND) narrowly missed on a 3-2 count to James Darnell, forcing in the winning run as the TinCaps literally walk off with the victory.

With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Jaff Decker singled off of Justin Mace (LP, 0-2) to star t the rally. South Bend brought in Zepeda from the bullpen, who immediately gave up a single to Sawyer Carroll then hit Allan Dykstra with a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout of Matt Clark made it two outs with the bases loaded, Zepeda walked Darnell on a close 3-2 pitch to score Decker for the win.

The Silver Hawks pushed the first run across the plate against Fort Wayne starter Stiven Osuna (ND) without getting a hit in the second inning. Jake Elmore and Isaias Asencio each were hit by a pitch, while Chris Davis was walked in between the two. Brendan Duffy picked up the RBI on a fielder's choice, putting South Bend ahead 1-0.

The TinCaps tied the game, scoring an unearned run against South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (ND) in the bottom of the third. With one out, Blake Tekotte reached on an error and went to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Decker's RBI single to left knotted the game at 1-1.

South Bend took the lead again by one in the sixth, scoring an unearned run against reliever Erik Davis (ND). Chris Davis reached on the error with one out, and scored from first on a double from Duffy for the 2-1 lead.

The TinCaps again tied it, this time with a run in the seventh against Daniel Vasquez (ND). Dykstra doubled to start the inning, and scored one out later on a RBI single by Darnell for the 2-2 tie.

The Silver Hawks missed a chance in the top of the eighth to go in front. With runners at first and second and two outs, Duffy hit a ball to the left of third baseman Darnell. Darnell made the play, but had no play at first. Instead, he spun around and fired the ball to the shortstop Kevin Hansen. Hansen snuck in behind pinch runner Victor Estevez and applied the tag after Estevez rounded the base too far.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon with a 3:05 PM start at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. South Bend will give the ball to RHP Brett Moorhouse (1-3, 3.81 ERA) while the TinCaps counter with RHP Anthony Bass (2-3, 3.86 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio.
