Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Back-to-back singles in the sixth inning provided the Suns the key hits needed in a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Braves in front of 2,349 fans Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Victor Diaz and Derek Michaelis drove in the first and second runs for the Suns, besting Braves starter Adam Wainwright who had a noticeable contingent from his nearby hometown of Brunswick, Ga. After Shane Victorino led off the sixth with a bunt single, Wainwright walked Jason Repko on four pitches. The two singles to follow scored both runs for the Suns (37-44 overall, 6-6 second half).
Wainwright (5-6) had allowed a leadoff single to Victorino in the first inning and didn't allow another until the bunt in the sixth. He struck out seven and failed to beat the Suns for the third consecutive outing.
Suns starter Alfredo Gonzalez (4-3) allowed one unearned run in seven innings to earn the victory. He scattered six hits and permitted only Jason Fitzgerald to score in the top of the sixth. Fitzgerald singled to right field but advanced to second when Reggie Abercrombie took a poor angle and failed to cut off the ball which was within his reach. Cory Aldridge's grounder moved Fitzgerald to third. He scored on Richard Lewis' two-out single.
Jason Frasor retired the side in order in the ninth to complete his fourth save of the season.
The Braves (37-43, 1-11) have lost eight in a row.
Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (8-3, 2.27 ERA) is scheduled to face Braves righty Matt Belisle (4-7, 3.57) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds.
