Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - Tennessee (11-1, 46-36) won its ninth game in a row with a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats (7-5, 49-31) Monday night behind the pitching of Chris Narveson. The win now has the Smokies leading the Mudcats by four games in the second half.
Narveson (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings in his first Double-A start. The lefty only allowed five hits while striking out six. He was added to the Smokies roster when Jeremy Cummings was called up to Triple-A Memphis.
Narveson led off the sixth inning with a single, his first professional hit, and later scored on John Nelson's second hit of the game. Skip Shumaker scored from third on a double play by Caonabo Cosme to put Tennessee ahead 2-0. Bucky Jacobsen followed with his 18th home run of the season to provide the final margin.
The three run lead was enough as Josh Kinney and Mike Lyons held the Mudcats scoreless for the final two innings. Narveson continued the dominant pitching by Smokies starters, who are 8-0 with a sub 1.00 ERA over the last eight games. It was Tennessee's fourth shutout over the last eight games.
The Smokies will host Carolina Tuesday night in the second game of the four game series. Rick Ankiel (2-5, 6.85) will face Trevor Hutchinson (1-0, 0.00) of the Mudcats.
