
Timbers Fall 4-1 in Road Match against Sporting Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Portland Timbers fell 4-1 to Sporting Kansas City on the road at Children's Mercy Park on Sunday afternoon. Portland grabbed an early lead in the eighth minute through Franck Boli, but SKC scored four unanswered goals to secure the win. The Timbers continue their road swing as they visit Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC in their next match on Saturday, June 3.
Boli Goals
Boli tallied his third goal of the season and his second goal in his last four games for Portland. His three goals rank as the second-most on the team in 2023. Two of his three goals this season have come in road matches. Notably, each of Boli's last two goals have been scored in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Goal-Scoring Plays
POR - Franck Boli, 8th minute: Off a headed clearance by Kansas City, Claudio Bravo quickly served the ball back toward the goal from the left wing. Franck Boli was able to get on the end of the ball, firing a shot first time from the center of the box into the bottom right corner.
SKC - Eric Thommy (Marinos Tzionis), 33rd minute: Eric Thommy dribbled out of the corner near the right side of the field before cutting toward the box and firing a curling strike from distance inside the left post.
SKC - Daniel Sallói (Graham Zusi, Tim Leibold), 66th minute: Kansas City switched the point of the attack from the left side to the right side of the field. Graham Zusi settled the ball at the edge of the box and delivered a cross to the edge of the six-yard box for Daniel Salloi, who converted from close range.
SKC - Own goal (Larrys Mabiala), 68th minute: On the counterattack, Alan Pulido dribbled into the box after receiving a pass from Daniel Sallói. Pulido dribbled around Aljaz Ivacic and Larrys Mabiala tracked back attempting to clear the ball but directed it into the back of Portland's goal.
SKC - Felipe Hernández (Roger Espinoza), 90+3: Roger Espinoza played a perfectly-weighted through ball in behind the Timbers backline. Felipe Hernández made a run into the box and played the ball around Ivacic coming off his line and into the back of the net.
Notes
Franck Boli scored his third goal of the season, which is second-most on the team.
Boli has scored two goals in his last four games.
The last two goals by Boli have been scored in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Two of Boli's three goals in 2023 have come in road matches.
Aljaz Ivacic made his 50th career appearance.
Ivacic finishes the match with four saves. It was his fourth straight match with at least four saves.
Evander finished with a match-high three chances created.
Diego Chara and Santiago Moreno are the only Portland players to appear in all 15 matches this season.
D. Chara is the only player to start every match for the Timbers in 2023.
