Timbers Fall 3-2 to LA Galaxy at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers scored a pair of late second-half goals, but were unable to overcome a early deficit, falling 3-2 to the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night at Providence Park. Diego Valeri entered the match as a late-game substitute and recorded his 80th career MLS goal, while Felipe Mora scored for a second consecutive match. The goal was Valeri's fourth of the regular season and Mora's second of the 2020 campaign.

80/80 Club

With his goal, Valeri has recorded 80 goals and 83 assists in 219 appearances (208 starts) in league play since joining the Timbers in 2013. He joins Landon Donovan (145 goals, 136 assists) and Jaime Moreno (133 goals, 102 assists) as the only players in MLS history to reach 80-plus goals and 80-plus assists in their career during the regular season.

Blanco Stats

Over Portland's last 10 matches since returning to play in July, Sebastián Blanco has recorded four goals and seven assists in all competitions. He recorded his team-leading fifth assist in regular-season play in the match. His five assists rank tied for second-most in MLS this season.

Against the Galaxy

Portland has scored in 13 consecutive matches in all competitions against the Galaxy, which established a club record for most consecutive matches with a goal against a single opponent. Individually, Blanco recorded his fourth assist in ten appearances across all competitions against the Galaxy. Valeri recorded his seventh goal in 18 regular-season matches against the Galaxy.

Timbers Firsts

Jeff Attinella and Julio Cascante made their season debuts in the match. For Attinella, it marked his first appearance for the club since June 26, 2019, against the Montreal Impact. Yimmi Chara recorded his first career assist with the Timbers in the match. Renzo Zambrano and Tomás Conechny earned their first starts of the 2020 season. Pablo Bonilla made his regular-season debut at Providence Park.

Goal-Scoring Plays

LAG - Efrain Álvarez (Sebastian Lletget), 15th minute: Sebastian Lletget played a pass from just inside the box on the right side to Efrain Álvarez and he converted from 12 yards out into the top right corner of the goal.

LAG - Cristian Pavón (Nicholas DePuy), 50th minute: Cristian Pavón received the ball just past midfield, dribbled down the left side and cut toward the center of the box before sending a strike just inside the left post.

POR - Felipe Mora, 67th minute: Renzo Zambrano's cross from a tight angle near the right post took a deflection, forcing Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham into a save. Bingham batted the ball away and it landed for Mora, who scored from close range in the center of the box.

LAG - Joe Corona, 71st minute: Joe Corona pounced on a loose ball just outside the box and sent a powerful strike into the top left corner of the goal.

POR - Diego Valeri (Yimmi Chara, Sebastián Blanco), 90+2 minute: Yimmi Chara sent a cross from the left side through the box to Valeri, who made a late run and slotted the ball in from close range at the left post.

Notes

With his goal, Diego Valeri became the third player in MLS history to record 80 goals and 80 assists in regular-season play, joining Landon Donovan and Jaime Moreno.

Valeri recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the regular season in the match.

Valeri scored as a substitute for the third time in his MLS, with the previous two goals coming in the 2013 season.

Valeri is one of three MLS players (Chris Wondolowski, Carlos Vela) to have scored seven or more goals against the Galaxy since the beginning of the 2013 season.

Felipe Mora tallied his second goal of the season, scoring for a second straight game.

Mora is the third Timbers player to score in consecutive regular-season matches this season along with Jeremy Ebobisse and Valeri.

Sebastián Blanco registered his team-leading fifth assist of the regular season and his seventh assists in all competitions. His five assists are tied for second-most in MLS.

In Portland's last 10 matches since MLS returned to play in July, Blanco has four goals and seven assists in all competitions.

Yimmi Chara recorded his first career assist with the Timbers. Chara is the 61st Timbers player to tally an assist for the club in an MLS match.

The Timbers travel for a road match against Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, Sept. 6, at CenturyLink Field.
