With less than 15 minutes in the first half, the Earthquakes doubled their lead when forward Chris Wondolowski found a tight opening from the edge of the box, curling his strike into the far corner in the 31st minute of play.

Despite chances from Portland (5-3-2, 17 pts) in the first half, including an effort from midfielder Darren Mattocks from just inside the box, and a long-distance strike from midfielder Sebastián Blanco, San Jose managed to score 10 minutes into the second half to extend its lead to a 3-0 advantage. After running in behind in the defense, Wondolowski was able to finish from the far right side of the box, recording his second goal in the 55th minute of play.

With 13 overall shots, including eight shots in the second half, Portland created chances late in the game with efforts from Blanco and midfielder Victor Arboleda, forcing goalkeeper David Bingham into consecutive saves in the 82nd minute.
