November 20, 2003 - International League (IL1)
Ottawa Lynx News Release
OTTAWA â The Ottawa Lynx are pleased to announce that the winningest manager in franchise history, Tim Leiper, will manage the Lynx in 2004.
Leiper, 37, returns to the Lynx after spending the 2003 season coaching the Boston Red Sox' Single-A affiliate Sarasota Red Sox. Leiper returns to the city where he has his most successful season as a manager, leading the Lynx to a franchise-best 80-61 record in 2002. Leiper's career winning percentage with the Lynx is the best in franchise history, at .567, ahead of only two other managers who have had a winning percentage over .500, Gary Allenson .549 (2003) and Mike Quade .514 (1993)
"I'm very excited to be back in Ottawa", said Leiper. "I really appreciate the opportunity that the Baltimore Orioles have given me, and I am looking forward to another great season. To be able to return as the manager of the team in my home city makes this even more special."
This will be Leiper's third stint as a part of the Lynx. In 1999, Leiper spent the season as hitting coach of the Lynx, before spending the 2002 season as field manager. Leiper is now lives in Ottawa, with his wife Randa, whom he met in Ottawa in 1999, and his two children, Eleni-Anna, 3, and one-year old Jackson.
"We're elated to have Tim back in Ottawa", said Lynx General Manager Kyle Bostwick. "Not only is he a quality individual, and from the Ottawa area, but he is an accomplished manager who has a track record for winning. We look forward to working with Tim again."
Signed as a free agent by Detroit in 1984, Leiper began a 12-year professional career during the 1985 season in the Tigers' chain. He played both infield and outfield during most of his career.
He reached the Triple-A level, spending time with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tidewater (now Norfolk) Tides and the Buffalo Bisons.
Leiper pitched in one game during the 1991 season while with Tidewater, allowing four hits and three earned runs during one inning of work. His older brother, Dave, pitched for the Ottawa Lynx during the 1995 and 1996 seasons, in addition to parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues with Oakland, San Diego, Montreal and Philadelphia.
Leiper, born in Whittier, California, becomes the 10th manager in Lynx history, and first two-time manager. The other Lynx managers: Mike Quade, Jim Tracy, Pete Mackanin, Pat Kelly, Jeff Cox, Rick Sweet, Stan Hough, and Gary Allenson. He recently returned home from Panama, where he served on the coaching staff of the Canadian National team that qualified for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Leiper will have a very capable group of coaches to help him on the field this year. Returning to the Lynx are pitching coach Steve McCatty, and field coach Dave Cash. McCatty and Cash both played a large part in a Lynx team who finished second in the International League in both batting and pitching in 2003.
P.J. Mainville will serve as the Lynx trainer in 2004. Mainville spent the last three seasons as the trainer for Double-A Bowie, and 2004 will be his seventh season in the Baltimore organization.
