Tigers Win 3-1; Take Series Against ValleyCats

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (23-19) scored two runs in the first inning and received six strong innings from RHP Josue Carreno (3-4) to beat the Tri-City ValleyCats (18-24) 3-1 before 1,175 fans at Dodd Stadium in Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning against Tri-City RHP Bobby Doran (1-4). CF P.J. Polk (2-4) singled and moved to third base on a single by RF Ryan Enos (1-4). 2B Alexander Nunez (0-4) followed with a ground out to score Polk. Enos advanced to second base on a past ball and went to third on Nunez's ground out.

3B Josh Ashenbrenner (1-4) hit an RBI single to plate Enos and make it 2-0. The ValleyCats scored a run in the second inning. DH Ben Heath (1-4) doubled and moved to third base on a ground out by DH Daniel Adamson (0-2). RF Adam Bailey (1-4) singled to score Heath for a 2-1 Connecticut lead.

Connecticut scored a run in the seventh inning to take a 3-1 advantage. SS Ryan Soares (0-3) reached base on a throwing error and stole second base. Polk singled to left field to score Soares.

TIGER TRACKS: The Tigers added RHP Tim Mowry from the GCL Tigers to their roster before the game. Mowry went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in nine appearances. He pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts in his Tigers debut on Sunday.

The Tigers begin a two-game series against the Lowell Spinners on Monday night at Dodd Stadium. RHP Brennan Smith (0-2, 2.76) gets the start for Connecticut against a yet to be announced starter for Lowell. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com.
