Tides Fall 4-2 to Chiefs

May 11, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Norfolk Tides couldn't figure out Syracuse Chiefs starter Craig Stammen Wednesday night at Harbor Park and fell for the fourth-straight time 4-2 in front of 4,029 fans.

After allowing a leadoff single to Tyler Henson in the first inning, Stammen (2-2, 3.26) retired 14-straight Tides batters and didn't give up a run until Blake Davis smacked a two-run, pinch-hit homer with one out in the eighth inning. The righthander finished the night with two earned runs and five hits on his book. He struck out six batters and walked none.

Rick VandenHurk (2-5, 5.94) had a solid outing for the Tides going 6.0 innings and allowing just four runs on five hits. The Major League veteran found himself in trouble on the mound just twice but paid both times, once on a two-out, two-run double by Michael Aubrey in the third inning that put the visitors on the board.

Pitching to a 2-0 deficit, VandenHurk allowed three-straight hits to leadoff the sixth inning, including a poke single from Chris Marrero that scored a run. The Tides pitcher got himself out of the jam by coaxing a run-scoring double-play by Tug Hulett and a pop out from Jesus Flores.

Pat Egan and Mark Worrell combined for 3.0 shutout innings with Egan giving up just two hits in his 2.0 innings. Worrell retired the side in order in the ninth.

Josh Wilkie retired the final five Tides hitters in order to pick up his third save of the season.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game set with a 12:15 pm contest. The Tides will send LH Chris George (2-2, 4.23) to the hill to try to salvage the series. The Chiefs will counter with RH Yuneski Maya (1-2, 3.55).
