Thunder's Kessy to play in AVP Chicago Tour stop

OAKBROOK TERRACE, ILL., AUGUST 21, 2002_ Chicago Thunder outside hitter Jennifer Kessy will compete in this weekend's Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Nissan U.S. Championships Of Beach Volleyball at North Avenue Beach in Chicago.

Kessy (San Diego, Calif.), who is currently 29th on the AVP women's tour money leaders list for 2002, has competed in every AVP event this season and has eight match victories.

Kessy, who helped lead the Thunder to a runner-up USPV finish in 2002, teamed up with longtime partner Heather Lowe in the first four tour events and then teamed with Cary Wendell to capture 9th place at the recent Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open. Kessy will again team with Wendell at North Avenue Beach this weekend.

Main draw action in both the men's and women's divisions begins Friday. The championship match of the 24-team women's draw is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, while the title match of the 32-team men's draw will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday.

On the women's side, the top-ranked duo of Holly McPeak and Elaine Young will go for their fifth AVP title this season, while the top ranked men's tandem of Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren will be in search of their third AVP crown in 2002. Beach volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, the all-time winningest pro beach volleyball player, will attempt to go over the $3 million earnings barrier in his career this weekend.

Both the men's (live) and women's (taped) title matches will be broadcast on NBC Sunday from 1-3 p.m. (central).
