Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
Evansville, Ind: It was simply the case of running into a hot goaltender, and luckily not in the playoffs but rather in a Sunday afternoon game with little meaning to conclude the regular season. The Bolts outshot Fayetteville 59-24, but goalie Ben Halford stole the show, stopping 57 shots and all three shootout attempts, and the Bolts fell 3-2 in the shootout.
Evansville struck first in the first period as Mark Petaccio scored at 3:10 from Dave Williams and Dylan Clarke, after Petaccio's shot pinballed off a Fayetteville defenseman and into the net. The Marksmen would tie the game at 11:28, but the lead would be regained only 30 seconds later as Carter Shinkaruk buried a breakaway shot, off the crossbar and in. The Bolts would hit the crossbar in the third and overtime periods, and Halford would make save after save to keep it close. The Marksmen would take the win in a shootout, 3-2.
For Evansville, Petaccio and Shinkaruk scored a goal each and Sylves made 22 saves. The Bolts finish the 2017-18 regular season establishing new franchise highs in wins, with 27 versus 14 last season, and points, with 63 this year compared to 38 in 2016-17.
The Thunderbolts next game will be in the first round of the SPHL Playoffs, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, April 12 at Ford Center against the Macon Mayhem. This game is free and open to the public thanks to E is for Everyone. The playoff series is best of three. Game two is set for Saturday in Macon, as well as game three if needed. The season record between the Thunderbolts and the Mayhem favors Macon, 4-1-2.
