Carolina Thunderbirds News Release

The Thunderbirds are still atop the FHL standings despite losing their first weekend series of the year to the Mentor Ice Breakers. A 3-game set saw Mentor taking away 6 points while the Thunderbirds grabbed 3.

The series kicked off Wednesday as the Thunderbirds finished their road swing of three games over five days and ended up losing to the Ice Breakers by a score of 4-3. It was a night of firsts for the Thunderbirds despite the loss as Joe Cangelosi and Viktor Grebennikov each scored their first goal of the season.

The series then shifted to Thanksgiving night where the Thunderbirds ran away with the game early but still had to fight off a late four goal charge from the Ice Breakers in the third period to win 6-5. New signing Beau Walker had 2 goals in this game for his Thunderbirds debut and Frankie McClendon picked up his second win of the season.

Tensions mounted in the third and final game of the series when the Ice Breakers shutout the Thunderbirds 3-0. It's the first time the Thunderbirds had been shutout at home since January 20th last season against Danville. On top of the loss the two teams combined for over 200 penalty minutes during the game. The FHL is currently reviewing the game to see if any supplemental discipline will be handed out.

The Thunderbirds now look ahead to a two game set with the Port Huron Prowlers this weekend in the Fairgrounds Annex. Friday's game is a 7:35 puck drop and will have a coat drive in partnership with Family Services Inc. happening before the game. Additionally, the Thunderbirds will be dressing WSSU relief pitcher TJ Goco during the game. Goco has agreed to a celebrity contract with the Thunderbirds and tickets are available with this link that will help support the WSSU baseball team.

Then on Saturday it's Kids Jersey Night brought to you by Salem Smiles with the first 500 kids 12 and under receiving a free Carolina Thunderbirds youth specialty jersey.

Tickets are on sale at the Fairgrounds Box Office and on TicketMaster.
