BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Brett Holmberg, Bill Bagron, John Nail, Marty Standish and defenseman Shaun Fisher each recorded two points to lead the Bloomington PrairieThunder to a 6-4 victory over Kalamazoo in International Hockey League action Sunday before 3,639 people at U.S, Cellular Coliseum.
The victory ran Bloomington's unbeaten streak to a franchise record 11 straight (8-0-0-3) and gave the PrairieThunder its sixth victory in the last seven games. It moved the team's overall mark to 20-22-1-3 (44 points).
Kalamazoo's record dropped to 27-19 (54 points). The teams meet again Wednesday in Kalamazoo at Wings Stadium in a 6:11 p.m.game.
Both teams netted a goal in the first period as Justin DePretis scored an unassisted one with 14:32 remaining. Fisher tied the game with 3:30 left in the first period on assists by Brent Clarke and Bagron.
The PrairieThunder erupted for four goals in the second period to enjoy a 5-2 advantage. Travis Granbois started the scoring with a goal at the 16:27 mark off assists from Fisher and goalie Ryan Ludzik.
Holmberg then scored his two goals on back-to-back efforts at the 15:02 and 12:33 marks. John Nail and Marty Standish had assists on the first goal, while Standish had the assist on the second goal.
Henry Kuster scored for the PrairieThunder on an assist by Jan Jas with 4:43 remaining before Kalamazoo's Glenn Detulleo scored with 1:18 remaining to complete the second period offensive onslaught.
Lucas Drake cut the Kalamazoo deficit to 5-3 with 19:10 left in the third period on assists by Casey Handrahan and Detulleo. Bagron countered the goal for Bloomington with 13:28 remaining on an assist by Nail.
Kalamazoo got its final goal with 1:45 to go by Mark Nebus with assists to Tommy Lange and Rick Cleaver.
Ludzik ran his unbeaten streak to four and his overall record to 9-7-1-2. He is 6-1-3 in his last 10 starts. He saved 31 of 35 shots. Jason Tapp took the loss for Kalamazoo, stopping 35 of 41 shots.
Kalamazoo was 1 for 3 on the power play, while Bloomington was unsuccessful in four attempts.
