FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals of the International Hockey League split a pair of road games last week completing the 17th week of action. Here is a quick look back.
Friday, February 6, 2009 - Flint 1 @ Fort Wayne 3 - All the scoring took place in the first period. The Generals fell behind 2-0 early as the Komets' Leo Thomas (18) scored at 1:00 and right wing Dominic Osman (14) connected at 6:24. Flint cut the lead in half as left wing John DiPace (22) recorded a short-handed goal at 9:45 for a 2-1 score. Fort Wayne regained their 2-goal cushion as defenseman Danko Mironovic (2) scored at 16:02 for the 3-1 final. Generals' goaltender Bill Zaniboni (4-5-1) stopped 40 of 43 shots in defeat, making his first start returning from injury in a game on December 26th.
Saturday, February 7, 2009 - Flint 3 @ Muskegon 2 - The Flint Generals of the International Hockey League put together another solid 60 minute effort in a very important 3-2 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks in front of 3,402 at L.C. Walker Arena on Saturday night. Center Jordan Boman (2), veteran forward Rob Voltera (6) and John DiPace (23) scored for Flint. DiPace, playing in his 400th pro game scored the game-winner. Robin Bouchard scored twice for Muskegon. Goaltender Bill Zaniboni was named the game's #1 star stopping 40 of 42 shots.
Weekly Nominations - Forward John DiPace is our nominee for the Pepsi/IHL Player of the Week. In two games, DiPace scored once in each game. A short-handed goal in Fort Wayne and the game-winner in Muskegon.
Right Wing Justin Styffe is our nominee for the Aquafina/IHL Rookie of the Week. Styffe recorded a very important assist on Flint's first goal in the 3-2 victory at Muskegon on Sunday. Styffe has registered at least 1 point in 3 of his last 4 games.
Bill Zaniboni is our nominee for the Southern Sports Supply/IHL Goaltender of the Week. The native of Plymouth, Massachusetts was named the #1 star in Flint's 3-2 victory at Muskegon on Saturday stopping 40 of 42 shots. He deserved a better fate in the Generals 3-2 defeat on Friday night stopping 40 of 43 shots dropping a 3-1 decision against the Komets. This was a strong weekend between the pipes by Zaniboni.
