Cabarrus County, NC. In the spirit of giving, members of the Carolina Thunder basketball team will be working in conjunction with the Back to the Basics to hand out turkeys and clothes at St. Paul's Baptist Church on Thanksgiving Day. The events are set to begin at 1130AM on 1401 N. Allen St. The Carolina Thunder, who began play last week in the ABA, sees this as a golden opportunity to give back to the community.":
"If you don't give back to the community, then you are just taking. This means a lot to me, it takes a community to raise kids you know," Assistant Coach Deshon Gaither remarked while reflecting on past years of volunteer work.
Community involvement is an important staple with any professional sports organization. Carolina Thunder Owner and General Manager Tony Priscaro believes that giving back to the community is what sports are all about. Priscaro is proud of his players' commitment and dedicaion to social involvement. "I don't have to teach my guys how to be civil human beings. These are the things that they want to do; they want to be a part of the community."
The residents agree that involving athletes helps the development of the entire community. When asked about professional athletes being involved in local activities, one Cabarrus County native responded in admiration. "I think its good. They should do more of that, especially in schools where some kids think that the world is a round ball. They need tangible evidence; an athlete is more than an image on TV." Many people never hesitate to attest that Thanksgiving is the most popular holiday amonst days of distinction. It is a time where families can gather with loved ones and enjoy the day. Volunteers at St. Paul's Baptist Church hope to make each turkey recipient experience the joy that comes with togetherness, at least for a day. Volunteers and players will begin just before noon. Everyone is invited. For more information, contact The Carolina Thunder at 704 343 0337 or visit www.thecarolinathunder.com or www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
