Krunk upsets Rhythm, 123-122
November 20, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Charlotte Krunk News Release
Nashville, TN. In a see-saw nail biter at Riverdale H.S in Murfreesboro, TN, the ABA Nashville Rhythm (3-1) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead with their trademark pressing defense and long range shooting, but the Charlotte Krunk (1-0) playing their first ABA professional game ever, settled down and got back in the game with lefthanded sharpshooter Antonio Burks hitting a timely three to break the momentum. An incredble shooting performance by the Rhythm's Cedric McGuinness (25 points) and Tommy Gunn (21 points) was offset by the Krunk's Ricky Clemons spectacular 36 points on an array of outside shots and twisting drives.
Krunk owner "Spyder" Duane Hughes nicked named Clemens "The Question" after the game. "I feel that name is appropriate in Ricky's case because opposing teams have no answer when it comes to the question of how do they stop him."
Deron Rutledge, the 6'6" 235 lb bruiser out of Texas pounded the paint for 23 points and 7 rebounds and hit clutch free throws down the stretch. Forward/center Marqus Ledoux scored 23 points to go along with 7 boards and stellar defense. Spyder went on to say, "This, to use an old cliche, was a total team effort. With what the Rhythm have accomplished up to this point, this was a huge win for us. The Nashville organizaton is top class all the way. What Mike (Ruttlen) and head coach Jerry Meyer have here is special. Their guys were hitting beyond NBA threes, but our guys never quit. That is a direct tribute to the preparation of the Charlotte Krunk by head coach Robert "Jaye" Floyd and his assistant, Jeff Bookman, who earlier in the week lost three key recruits to other leagues.
There were key contributions from point guard Travis Holcomb, Faye, who steadied the team with with 7 assists when they fell behind and newcomer Jermaine Wallace who pulled down key rebounds when the game was in doubt. Spyder lauded the efforts of Jevon Clarke, Johnny Tyson, Warren Bennet and Terris Sifford. "As I said, a total team effort."
"Brian and Kris have done a great job of keeping everyone focused on the job at hand while I platform the entertainment. I have probably payed too much attention to the entertainment side of our company and wanted to show the team that I absolutely care about the basketball side of this equation. I am usually laid back, but I think I got a little "Mark Cuban-ish" tonight. It was all in good spirit though. It was a fabulous game on both sides. We get to go home with a win as the City of Charlotte prepares for our home opener at the Cricket with the Mike Jones after-game concert. This was ABA basketball at it's best. The Mississippi Stingers are no joke, so my players better not get big headed about this victory and you know the Rhythm will be gunning for us when we play them next Sunday with fellow Tennessean Ben Tankard in the house."
