Breakers cruise by Frenzy

Northeast Pennsylvania Breakers News Release

Scranton, PA. (From Chad Jennings, Scranton Times). A 14-point run put the Breakers in the lead and a barrage of 3-pointers from Willie Chandler sealed the win at the Lackawanna College Student Athletic Center. A halftime deficit turned into a runaway 135-117 win over the Boston Frenzy, building the NEPA Breakers unblemished record to 4-0 in their inaugural season.

Down by six at halftime - and down 10 soon after the break - the Breakers scored six unanswered baskets, capped by Chandler's 3-pointer with 6:44 left in the third quarter that made the socre 79-75. Larry Jones scored six points during the run, including the sot with 7:19 left that gave the breakers a lead they would never relinquish.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Chandler hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to put the game well out of reach. He finished with a team high 31 points. Early on, though, Chandler and the rest of the Breakers struggled to a 66-60 halftime deficit. Starting center Ron Rollerson called it the team's worst half since the season opener. Point guard Dave Januzzi blamed it on sloppy defense. Coach Al Clocker said it simply wasn't the type of half that should be associated with professional basketball.

"I told them I needed to go to the library and get a book on how to coach fifth and sixth grade basketball," Clocker said. "That's what the mistakes were."

Januzzi, who finished with 26 points, hit just one field goal in the first quarter. Rollerson, who finished with 22, didn't attempt a single shot in the second quarter. Chandler, meanwhile, missed his first five 3-point attempts. Clearly, all of that turned around, highlighted by Chandler hitting six of his final eight 3-pointers. "Willie hit so many big 3's that really broke it open for us," Rollerson said. And wound up making the Breakers fourth straight win look awfully easy.
