
Thunder Tame Cottonmouths in OT

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Bloomington Thunder moved into a tie with the Columbus Cottonmouths for ninth in the Southern Professional Hockey League after a 2-1 overtime win on Friday night at the Columbus Civic Center. The Thunder have now won five of their last six games.
After a scoreless first period that featured three fights, the Cottonmouths scored with 17:40 left in the second period when Sam Bowles converted his own rebound. The Thunder evened the game with 13:36 left in the second chapter when Kory Helowka earned his first point with a rebound power play goal.
The tally remained 1-1 until the final minute of overtime, when Snakes goalie Travis Bosch made a strong save of a Peter Cintala wraparound but had no chance at the rebound goal by Kyle Watson for the game-winner with 28.9 seconds left.
Max Strang earned the win with 40 saves while Bosch took the overtime loss with 32 stops. Both teams had three power play chances with the Thunder recording the lone conversion.
The Thunder conclude the road trip with a rematch against the Cottonmouths at 6:30 p.m. Central before returning home on Friday, January 10 to host the Peoria Rivermen. Friday's game is Scout Night with special activities and pricing for local scouts. Ticket orders for the special scout pricing are due on Monday. Junior honors: Micah Young of the Bloomington Junior Blaze has been named Midwest Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Month, the circuit announced Friday. Young is an 18-year-old native of Towanda who recorded a point in all six games in December highlighted by a three-goal, one-assist game on December 23 against the Berkley Bruins. Young has three two-point games and is riding a 10-game point streak with 11 goals and seven assists for 18 points over that period. The Junior Blaze return to action at home next Friday, January 10 at 3 p.m. before the Thunder contest at 7:05 p.m.
