Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder fell 6-3 to the Colorado Eagles at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Wednesday night. After falling behind 5-0, Wichita pulled within two goals, but Colorado was able to hold on for the win.
The Eagles powered in front with three goals just 3:11 into the game. 50 seconds in, Kevin Ulanski threaded a shot past Scott Campbell from the bottom of the right faceoff circle after receiving a pass from Ryan Tobler behind the net. Jay Birnie stole a pass at his own blue line and turned it into a breakaway goal at 2:26 to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Colorado scored their third goal at 3:11 on Aaron Schneekloth's shot from the left side of the Thunder blue line. The goal chased Scott Campbell who was relieved by Ian Keserich. Keserich helped stabilize the period, but the Eagles scored again at 17:01 when Riley Nelson gained enough ground on the Thunder defense to score shorthanded from the right half-boards.
Wichita crawled back into the game in the second, but not before Colorado added another goal. Brett Lutes buried a one-timer on a two-on-one low in the Thunder zone at 5:21 to make it 5-0. Wichita finally got on the board at 7:42 in the second. Brett Beauchamp fired a slapshot from the left point, raising the puck over the left shoulder of Eagles' goaltender Mike Mole. Wichita earned its second goal of the period at 13:36 when Neil Clark tipped in Mark Adamek's shot from the point on a delayed Colorado penalty. Tomas Klempa helped keep the play alive by battling in the corner with Colorado big man Jay Birnie before feeding the puck to Adamek.
The Thunder continued to fight back early in the third, scoring their third unanswered goal at 3:49. Paul Kelly grabbed a pass in the slot from Neil Clark and finished off a backhander from a tough angle to make it a two-goal game. Colorado stopped the Thunder's run though, potting their second shorthanded goal of the night at 10:32 in the period. Steve Haddon, who appeared to have been offsides, raced into the slot on a breakaway and beat Ian Keserich on a backhander.
Keserich stopped 17 of 20 in a de facto loss. Penner was 34 of 37 in the win. Wichit went 5 for 5 on the penalty kill while going 0 for 5 on the power play. Wichita is now 65 for its last 69 while shorthanded. Clark scored three points in his Thunder debut.
The Thunder next plays on Friday when they host the Missouri Mavericks at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
