Thunder Loses to Quad City

MOLINE, Ill. - Joel Gasper scored two goals, while goaltender Jared Kaufmann saved 33 of 34 shots to lead the Quad City Mallards to a 5-1 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder before 3,273 people Thursday night at the i Wireless Center in International Hockey League action.

The loss dropped the PrairieThunder's record to 31-30-4-6 (72 points) and Bloomington's magic number at six over Flint to secure the fourth and final spot in the postseason playoffs. The PrairieThunder, which has a 0-7-0-1 record on the Mallards' home ice, returns to action Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Muskegon in its final regular season home game at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Quad City gained a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Tyler Kindle and Gasper. Kindle's came 3:48 into the game off assists by Aaron Spotts and Chris Lipsett. Gasper got his goal off an assist by Matt Cook with 4:38 remaining in the period.

The Mallards added two power play goals in the second period by Obi Aduba and Gasper. Aduba's came 49 seconds into the period on assists by Brandon Marino and Jaques Perreault. Gasper's second score of the game was 70 seconds later on assists by Shane Lovdahl and Patrick Levesque.

Quad City gained a 5-0 lead on Chris Lipsett's goal with 15:52 remaining in the game. He was assisted by Justin White and Kindle. Bloomington's lone goal came from Jamie Carroll with 1:05 left on assists by Brett Holmberg and Nick Elligsen.

Andrew Martin, who was pulled after Quad City's fourth goal, took the loss in net. He stopped just 11 of 15 shots. Kaufmann earned the win.

*Lepine gets called to Albany*

Bloomington defenseman Jason Lepine was called up Thursday night after the game to Albany of the AHL. He will miss the next two PrairieThunder games before returning to the team Sunday. The PrarieThunder also is without center Matt McIlvane, who is on call-up with the Peoria Rivermen, until Monday.
