Muskegon's Krug Earns Defenseman Of The Year

ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Thursday that Muskegon defenseman Matt Krug has been named the 2009-10 IHL Defenseman of the Year as selected by league head coaches, general managers and members of the media.

The 24-year-old native of Southfield, Michigan is currently tied for the league lead among IHL defenseman in scoring with 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) in 70 games played. His 44 points make him the Lumberjacks most productive defenseman and rank him fifth on the team in scoring. Krug also leads defenseman in power play goals (8) and is tied for first for goals scored (13). He has compiled a plus-15 rating with six games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Krug is in his first full season as a professional, playing just one playoff game last season with the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League after finishing his final year of college at Robert Morris University.

The 6-0, 215-pound defenseman had two four-point nights this season. The first came back on October 17th, in just his third professional game, scoring his first professional goal and first professional assists, dishing out three, to cap off the four-point contest. The second came on January 3rd, where the rookie defenseman scored two goals and two assists in the Lumberjacks 6-5 win over Flint.

Krug will be presented with the award on Saturday, April 10th.
