Portland Thunder News Release
PORTLAND, OR - Another week, another opportunity.
That's what the Thunder continue to preach as they continue through one of the toughest schedules in the league. Their two-game win streak was dashed last week by the Rattlers, but now there's an opportunity to start a new one.
The San Jose Sabercats haven't shown much interest in allowing the Thunder to start winning, having defeated the Thunder in Portland in both games between the squads this season.
Russ Michna excelled in the season opener, posting a 147.4 rating in just one half against the Thunder defense, still the best performance by any opposing QB against the Thunder to date.
In the second matchup, however, the ball started to bounce a bit more Portland's way, as San Jose managed just to eke out a 38-32 win in the Moda Center. The Thunder have since broken through to the win column, thanks to some new additions.
Eric Rogers, who joined the team just after that San Jose loss, has posted 100-yards and four touchdowns in each of his last two games, earning league honors each week.
Even quarterback Danny Southwick will be, if not new to the Sabercats, someone they haven't faced before as a Thunder quarterback. Southwick did start his AFL career in San Jose before bouncing around the league and ending up in Portland.
For their part, the Sabercats enter the game on a roll, having won their previous three games and having enjoyed a bye last week.
These teams make their AFL on ESPN debut in a divisional rivalry that needs a Portland win to get started. On Saturday at 7 p.m., we'll find out if it has.
