FLINT, Mich. - A pair of short-handed goals and a pair of power play goals lifted the Flint Generals to a 4-2 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder in International Hockey League action Friday at Periani Arena,
The outcome moved the Generals within one point of the PrairieThunder for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming postseason playoffs. Bloomington's record dipped to 31-33-4-6 (72 points), while Flint moved to 32-35-3-4 (71 points).
The PrairieThunder finishes the regular season with back-to-back games at Port Huron on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Flint plays host to regular-season champion Muskegon on Saturday before heading to Fort Wayne on Sunday.
The Generals owned a 1-0 lead after the first period on Pascal Rheaume's power play goal at the 16:50 mark. Brian Smolinski and John Mori had the assists. The Generals extended the advantage to 2-0 with 13:28 remaining in the second period on a Mori short-handed goal with an assist from Smolinski.
Matt McIlvane cut the deficit in half for Bloomington off an assist by Preston Briggs midway through the period. Chris Bogas answered for Flint with 13:41 left in the third period on a short-handed effort with assists to Smolinski and Mori.
Jon Booras tallied for the PrairieThunder with 11:31 remaining on an assist by Zac Pearson before Smolinski scored two minutes later off a Rheaume assist.
