Throwback Thursday Has Saints Reaching into Past, Sign Pitcher Sattler

ST. PAUL, MN (March 13, 2014) - Dan Sattler spent a whopping 10 days with the St. Paul Saints in 2012. It was enough for the hard throwing right-hander to make an impact on two teams in the state: the Saints and Minnesota Twins. Sattler, who pitched the last two seasons in the Twins organization and was on the precipice of the Majors before getting hurt, was signed as a free agent on Thursday by the Saints adding to an already deep pitching staff.

The 30-year-old righty had an incredible 2012 year that had many thinking he would be pitching at Target Field. During his time with the Saints he went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and three saves in five relief appearances. In 7.0 innings of relief he allowed just one hit while walking two and striking out five. After his stint with the Saints he had his contract purchased by the Twins, becoming the 100th different Saints player to have his contract purchased, and moved from Single-A Fort Myers, to Double-A New Britain, to Triple-A Rochester in the matter of five weeks. Between the three stops he was 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA and three saves in 15 relief appearances. In 29.2 innings pitched he walked just 10, struck out 20 and opponents hit a microscopic .173 against him. Unfortunately, his season came to an end after a July 22 outing when he injured his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery.

Last season Sattler began his rehab by pitching 10 games at the Gulf Coast level in July before being promoted to Double-A New Britain. He was 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 18 relief appearances between the two stops. In 16.1 innings he walked 11 and struck out 14 while opponents hit .279 against him.

Sattler was a 44th round selection by the Texas Rangers out of Purdue University in 2006. He pitched two seasons for the Rangers reaching Single-A in 2008. After being released by the Rangers in 2009 he caught on with the Kansas City T-Bones of the Independent Northern League and was dominant. He went 3-3 with a 1.66 ERA, which included two separate lengthy stints without giving up an earned run. He went 13 straight relief appearances without allowing an earned run from June 17-July 13 and eight straight relief appearances without allowing a run from July 24-August 8. His success brought him attention and his contract was purchased by the Oakland Athletics on August 26.

He spent one season with the Athletics organization and pitched at Single-A and Double-A in 2010. Following the season the Angels took him in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

Sattler spent all of 2011with the Los Angeles Angels organization, most of it at Double-A Arkansas. He was 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 19 relief appearances. In 30.0 innings pitched he walked 21 and struck out 29. He was placed on the disabled list on May 16 with a left foot contusion and made five rehab assignments with the Arizona Angels from July 20-31. Early in the season he pitched two scoreless appearances with Single-A Inland Empire of the California League.

The Saints have signed 13 players during the off-season, 10 pitchers and three position players. The Saints 2014 season begins on May 15 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the defending American Association Champion Gary SouthShore Railcats.
